Before the World Told You Who to Be

An Ocean Wisdom Reflection

Have you ever stopped to wonder who you were before the world started telling you who you should be?

It's an interesting question, isn't it? From the moment we're born, we begin learning how to participate in the world around us. Our parents, teachers, religions, communities, and eventually our own experiences help shape our understanding of life. We learn what's acceptable, what's expected, what success looks like, and what we're supposed to believe.

And there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. We need guidance, we need to learn how to get along with one another, and we naturally want to belong. But somewhere along the way, something interesting happens. We begin confusing what we've learned to believe with who we actually are. Before we know it, we're so busy trying to thrive and survive in the ol' matrix that we rarely stop to question any of it!

The Curious Kid

I started questioning things pretty early in life. Around twelve years old, I began feeling disconnected from the religious beliefs I'd grown up with. I had questions, and the answers I was finding didn't always satisfy my curiosity.

By thirteen, I'd discovered meditation. I remember being fascinated by the possibility of exploring consciousness beyond the ordinary boundaries of physical experience. The idea that there might be more to our existence than what we perceive through our five senses was irresistible to me!

Of course, then came the teenage years. Partying, girls, adventures, and a few semesters at the University of Hard Knocks. LOL! My spiritual curiosity didn't disappear, but let's just say it occasionally had some competition.

Over the years, I continued exploring different spiritual philosophies, meditation practices, and ideas about consciousness. My journey certainly wasn't a straight line. There were periods of deep exploration, times when everyday life took over, and plenty of occasions when I probably wasn't paying attention to much of anything beyond what was happening that weekend.

But looking back, I can see something that was quietly developing throughout those years. Even when I wasn't consciously searching, I was learning about myself. The remembering was happening all along.

The Identities We Collect

As we move through life, we accumulate identities. We're somebody's child, somebody's partner, a parent, a business owner, an employee, a success, a failure, or any number of other labels. Some of those identities are meaningful and beautiful, while others become burdens we carry without even realizing it.

We also accumulate beliefs. Some come from our families, others from our education, culture, religion, or personal experiences. Eventually, many of those beliefs become so familiar that we no longer recognize them as beliefs. We experience them as truth, rarely stopping to ask whether they're actually ours.

I don't think this happens simply because we grow older. I think it happens because we're human. We want to fit in, we have responsibilities, bills need paying, families need caring for, and work needs doing. Pretty soon, we're caught up in the business of living, with little time left to wonder who we really are.

And isn't that something? We can spend an entire lifetime learning how to function in the world without ever seriously questioning the identity we've created along the way.

Remembering

Over the years, I've explored meditation, spiritual traditions, consciousness, and countless questions about the nature of existence. I've also spent a considerable amount of time simply living life, making mistakes, learning lessons, and occasionally getting knocked upside the head by the universe. You might say I've had a lifetime of shadow work, whether I was consciously participating in it or not!

But through all those experiences, something gradually became clearer to me. I wasn't necessarily searching for a new identity. I was searching for what existed beneath all the identities I'd accumulated.

For me, that understanding is deeply connected to the soul, to Source Consciousness, and to the experience of being fully present. I call it remembering.

I'm not talking about remembering a particular event or returning to some idealized version of childhood. I'm talking about recognizing something fundamental about ourselves that may have been there all along, quietly waiting beneath the noise of everyday life.

And here's something I've come to appreciate. We don't have to discard everything we've learned or experienced to begin remembering. Our experiences have helped shape us. The joys, mistakes, relationships, challenges, and discoveries all have something to teach us. Perhaps the invitation is simply to become more aware of which beliefs and identities genuinely reflect who we are, and which ones we've been carrying because we thought we were supposed to.

From Searching to Sharing

For much of my life, I've been searching. Searching for understanding, meaning, and a deeper connection with the nature of consciousness and existence. And while I certainly don't claim to have all the answers, I've reached a place where I feel I've remembered something important about who I am.

Now, rather than continuing to search only for myself, I'd like to help others explore that same possibility. Not by telling anyone what they should believe or convincing them that my understanding of life must become theirs, but by sharing experiences, asking questions, and creating opportunities for people to explore their own awareness.

That's really what Wavewalker Healing and Ocean Wisdom are about. An invitation to become curious again, to question the familiar, and to explore what lies beneath the expectations and beliefs we've collected along the way. Perhaps, somewhere in that exploration, we begin to remember a little more of who we really are.

A Question to Take With You

The next time you have a quiet moment, perhaps over your morning coffee or while watching the waves roll onto the shore, consider this:

Who was I before the world told me who I should be?

Don't worry about finding the perfect answer. Just notice what comes up. Allow yourself to be curious, without judgment or expectation. You might be surprised by what you remember!

Until next time, keep exploring.
